Canine Celebration Day! – Flushing, New York

Among the highlights this year, on Saturday, May 6, the Westminster Kennel Club will present its inaugural “Canine Celebration Day,” a fun, family-friendly day filled with three different competitions, numerous demonstrations, and hundreds of dogs to meet and pet, including the newly eligible breed to America’s Dog Show, the Bracco Italiano – Featured Above ⭐️

WESTMINSTER’S CANINE CELEBRATION DAY SCHEDULE

  • 10th Anniversary Masters Agility Championship presented by Purina Pro Plan
    • Preliminaries 8:00am – 4:00pm
    • Finals Competition 7:00pm – 9:30pm 
      Agility is a timed competition that tests a dog’s ability to complete an obstacle course following the commands of its handler. Purebred and All-American (mixed breed) dogs are eligible, to compete in 1 of 5 height classes and are judged on time and completion (minus faults) of the course.
    • Special demonstrations from the NYPD K-9 Unit
      • Agility Ring 2 – 11:15am | Agility Ring 1 – 12:15pm
  • 8th Annual Masters Obedience Championship presented by Purina Pro Plan
    • 9:00am – 3:00pm  
      Obedience is a command-driven competition that tests a dog’s ability to comply with the asks of the handler. Commands can include a combination of sit, stay, jump, retrieve and scent discrimination. Purebred and All-American (mixed breed) dogs will compete to showcase the desired skills of a model dog.
  • Dock Diving at Westminster presented by Cosequin
    • 8:00am – 4:00pm  
      Dock Diving is a sport in which dogs run the length of a dock and leap as far out into the water as possible to catch their favorite toy. The competition is based on height or distance. 
  • Breed Showcase
    • 8:30am – 4:00pm  
      Guests will have the chance to meet and learn about an abundance of incredible dog breeds.

PREMIERE EVENTS

10TH ANNIVERSARY MASTERS AGILITY CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY PURINA PRO PLAN

See 350 of the top agility dogs in the US competing in this timed competition that tests a dog’s ability to complete an obstacle course following its handler’s commands. Purebred and All-American (mixed breed) dogs are eligible to compete in 1 of 5 height classes and are judged on time and completion (minus faults) of the course. The Westminster Kennel Club donates $5,000 to honor the winner of the Masters Agility Championship to an AKC training club of their choice or the AKC Humane Fund.

8TH ANNUAL MASTERS OBEDIENCE CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY PURINA PRO PLAN

You’ll see With 25 of the top obedience dogs in the country competing. Commands can include a combination of sit, stay, jump, retrieve, and scent discrimination. Purebred and All-American (mixed breed) dogs will compete to showcase the desired skills of a model dog. The Westminster Kennel Club donates $5,000 to honor the winner of the Masters Obedience Championship to an AKC training club of their choice or the AKC Humane Fund.

DOCK DIVING AT WESTMINSTER PRESENTED BY COSEQUIN

Dock Diving is fun and exciting!  You will see 150 of the top dogs in the sport as owners throw their dog’s favorite toy into a pool and watch as they run a 40-foot-long dock and dive to retrieve. The goal? To have the longest jump possible, which can be 30 feet or more for those more experienced!

THE WESTMINSTER BREED SHOWCASE

Meet some of the most popular breeds and some you rarely see.  You can interact with these lovable dogs and their owners to learn what makes them special. Whether you’re in the market for a new family member, now or in the future, learn which breed might best fit your lifestyle.

The newly eligible Bracco Italiano will also be part of the Breed Showcase. Come meet this ancient breed that will be competing in the dog show for the first time in 2023.

NYPD K-9 UNIT DEMONSTRATION

The NYPD K-9 Unit help officers do their job safer and faster. The dogs freely and willingly go into areas officers are not able to. Each dog is trained to respond to certain circumstances, but all receive rigorous training throughout the year, so they are always ready when called upon. 

Special demonstrations from the NYPD K-9 Unit will take place during the lunch break in both Agility rings at approximately 12pm.


COSEQUIN DEMO RING

HERDING DEMONSTRATION 

Come to see how purposeful-bred dogs are used on the farm to herd livestock.  These energetic canines have the instinct to direct and gather animals for ranchers and farmers. You will get a chance to observe different breeds in action as they herd a flock of ducks as directed by their owners.  

FREESTYLE OBEDIENCE DEMONSTRATION

You will see some of the most talented teams performing various routines ranging from the simplest obedience commands to the most complicated dance moves. This lineup of amazing dogs will entertain and delight with an array of fun activities they enjoy as much as the audience.

SCENT WORK DEMONSTRATION

In the sport of Scent Work, dogs get to do what they love most, sniffing! Based on professional detection dog work, the handler and dog work together to find a hidden scent. The scent is a cotton swab saturated with an essential oil such as Clove. When the dog finds the swab, it must tell the handler it has found it, then the handler tells the judge. Any dog will have fun learning to do Scent Work!

DOG SHOW 101 PRESENTATION

Ever wonder how a dog show works? Learn what the judge looks for when examining dogs and watching them gait around the show ring. Experts in the dog show world share their knowledge about the organization in the ring, the judging process, and more. Make sense of the sport you love to watch with this educational presentation.
